H: We’ve played this game a couple of times together now. The first time you didn’t really like it, but this is a game that I’ve always wanted to play. Honestly, it met my expectations – I really enjoyed it overall even if it can be a bit annoying to play at times. I liked the minigame vibe and there are lots of maps and game types – we queued for a lot of games this time around and basically all the rounds were different.
Y: I hate the slime one though but yeah, it’s a really classic party/battle royale game. I can see where the appeal is although it’s not my kind of game and that’s probably why I didn’t enjoy it as much. Overall, the good things were the artwork across season passes and the map design. It’s all a lot of fun and a lot of variety, so it’s very cool. For me, it’s not really down my alley but the only thing in particular, objectively speaking, that I didn’t like about Fall Guys is that the controls aren’t as receptive and immediate. In a game where you fall and die – a platformer – I thought they would put more thought into that. I mean that might be part of the fun of the game. Although sometimes there were minute ledges that you actually have to jump over but you assume that you can walk over and I would just be stuck there and then fall.
H: You know how you shift to jump onto the ledge? I couldn’t do that, tt never worked for me. The actual mechanics of the gameplay are a bit iffy.
Y: I mean the budget goes into the design and it’s really nice, it almost makes me want to keep playing.
H: You actually seemed to enjoy it a bit more today.
Y: Yeah, because we actually won.
H: We should actually address that, it’s actually pretty hard to win or even survive past the first round but maybe because we’re bad.
Y: I think it’s mostly because we’re bad. You are only racing with each other so it’s mostly about knowing the map well. If you play enough, I’m sure you’ll play a bit better. I feel like I improved this time.
H: It’s a steep learning curve, is what it is.
Y: Not that steep. Today was half an hour and combined, we only played a couple of hours at most.
H: I mean, going from beginner to actually starting to qualify to the next round is not long but it’s difficult – it takes some time to get the hang of it. We played 5 rounds and we only qualified once, and I fell really early in all of them.
Y: True, it’s disheartening. I’m sure there’s no beginner queue or MMR, they just dump everyone together.
H: The queue was actually not that long, I have to say.
Y: Yeah the queues were always pretty fast with this game. I wonder if it’s because the game time is relatively short. Even if we won everything, it’d probably only take us 8 minutes tops for a full round and that’s down to 6 people from 50/60 people so I’m sure that helps.
H: We didn’t have to reach 60 players in the queue to get into a game right?
Y: True, we did queue in once with about 24 people in the first round.
Y: Overall, it’s a pretty standard battle royale/multiplayer setup with all the available customisations and different game modes. It’s a fun game especially with friends, you can just load in and play since it’s pretty casual. Even though party games are not my thing I still enjoyed it.
H: It’s not something we would continue to play together regularly because it’s not your style of game, but it’s definitely a fun game to play – something simple and easy to play with friends socially once in a while. I enjoyed it.
