A Not So Tricky Egg Game
Gudetama: The Tricky Egg is a simple card game with a cute theme and its own unique twist. It was enjoyable as a couple but has some flaws for larger groups.

Y: It was an enjoyable themed card game. You know games like Snap and Blackjack that you keep playing over and over? They’re so addictive but also a little reliant on luck. It’s that same classic feel with some cute Gudetama artwork and a little twist of its own. The rounds are pretty short but we ended up playing for almost an hour - multiple rounds and multiple games - which was pretty surprising.
H: Honestly I thought it was a unique style of a card game, which I enjoyed. It took me a while to understand the game but overall I enjoyed the gameplay and the card designs were quite cute.
Y: Though I should add, the cute designs might be a little niche for a game that - mechanically speaking - could totally be enjoyed by a wider audience given a more general design.
Y: It’s not really a tricky game when you get down to it. The rhythm is a push and pull between players, and it’s often based on the hand that you’re dealt with, with only some element of skill in manoeuvring the round.
H: Yeah, but I liked that it wasn’t too confusing and that I could learn how to use different strategies as I played over time.
Y: But it would be interesting to see how the dynamics would change if we played with more than two people.
H: Yes because of that rule where you have to either play a card bigger than the person before you just played or play your smallest card. More players would have made the whole dynamic very different.
Y: We already had a lot of fun with just us two and it might have been even more fun with a larger group, but it definitely would have taken longer.
H: Yeah, but it definitely would have been fun!
H: But also, I don’t like games that rely too much on luck and since we only had five cards per round… honestly, it did rely on luck.
Y: Yeah I agree with that - it was too much luck in retrospect. It was mostly fine between the two of us since skill still had a weighting of about 40% (with luck being 60%) in my opinion. Considering a bigger group, however, skill would probably be like 20% and I don’t know how the game would swing that way. A large group all playing to luck would be no fun at all.
Y: It’s a classic game. Loved it, but there might’ve been a little too much luck mixed into the eggnog. Otherwise, delicious.
H: It was a fun game and very different to other games that I play, but again, it relied a bit too much on luck for me to give it a five.
