H: I actually really enjoyed this game because it’s not too stressful. It’s an easy game to play and the mechanics aren’t hard to learn. The graphics are also quite nice. The only downside is that there are not a lot of real people playing. I spent a lot of the game just collecting stuff and barely shooting at people… but maybe that’s because I’m playing with you.
Y: Oh, am I taking your kills? (teehee)
H: You kill them before I even get a chance to see them but it means I’m less stressed so there’s that.
Y: Yeah, I agree with what you said earlier - it’s not as complex as other shooters. The class system is nice and the selection and variety of weapons aren’t bad either. There are also some nice graphics thanks to it being developed by Hi-Rez, who also made Paladins. It’s a decent game and I was leaning towards a 4 because it was a lot of fun but I ended up giving it a 3 because of a number of reasons.
Y: Firstly, there’s only one map and it doesn’t get updated. Weapons-wise, there are always certain weapons that are outright better and depending on whether you play solo or as a team, there are certain classes that are always a better match-up. The lack of balance and regular updates makes the game feel less polished. Although it’s a nice and simple game, I feel that people won’t stick to it or invest their time in it in the long run.
H: Maybe it’s because you played it more than me… like I didn’t even realise it was the one map every time - well, I just follow you around. For the classes, I didn’t feel the imbalance but it’s probably because you killed them all.
Y: That or we got destroyed.
H: There were a few bot games where I didn’t really do anything but it was fun when we actually played against real people. I also appreciated that it wasn’t that easy for me to die. It wasn’t a one-shot kill and there was actually a fight. Maybe because I’m used to Valorant where any shot meant death.
Y: It might be because this is your first battle royale - they tend to have more balanced gunfights while being fast-paced. I personally wanted more variation to the fights - I feel like right now we kill bots really fast or overgeared players kill us really quickly. Some ability cooldown adjustments and map updates would be nice to shake up the game a little. It has potential but nothing particularly stands out, and this isn’t helped by the low playerbase.
H: Yeah, I think the lack of players is what makes it a 4 for me (instead of a 5).
Y: The use of bots is both a blessing and curse. There’s also cross-play which helps to bump up the numbers - though to be honest, you might sometimes come up against a console player and you wouldn’t be able to tell if they’re bots or not.
H: So, what are your closing thoughts?
Y: Overall, it’s like an arcade or minigame of the battle royale genre in my eyes. It’s a nice and lightweight shooter to just hop in and play. When thinking about committing time to it, there’s a low ceiling because of the unbalanced and unpolished nature of the game but it has lots of potential to improve.
H: I think you’re right. I’m able to appreciate it a lot because it’s one of the easier battle royales and I don’t have a lot of experience with that type of genre. I’m so used to Valorant so this really reduces my game stress to shooting games. It’s a good entry point to battle royales!
